Iranian Americans in Houston Unite to Highlight Unrest and Internet Blackouts in Iran

Iranian-Americans and their supporters convened in Uptown Houston on Sunday, participating in a worldwide movement aimed at highlighting the ongoing unrest and human rights issues in Iran.

Demonstrators gathered along Post Oak Boulevard, waving Iranian flags and holding placards that called for freedom and international support for the Iranian populace. For many attendees, the situation is profoundly personal, as they still have family members residing in Iran.

“Now imagine being cut off from every single person in your family who is stuck in Iran,” shared Parmida Mahdavi. “We cannot even communicate with them to ensure their safety.”

Organizers of the rally emphasized that internet restrictions and communication blackouts have severely hindered the ability of individuals outside Iran to connect with their loved ones or stay informed about the situation within the country.

“We have family and friends living in Iran, and we’re unable to communicate with them,” remarked Waheed Garmarudi.

Several demonstrators expressed a desire for people in the United States to grasp the emotional strain that the current crisis has imposed on Iranian families living abroad. “Imagine not having internet on your phone for just 30 minutes. It would drive all of us crazy,” Mahdavi stated during the rally.

Others voiced their concerns about executions, censorship, and what they termed escalating repression in Iran. “The internet blackout remains total… an absolute digital blackout… executions are still occurring,” noted Dr. Nooshin Motahari.

Participants stressed that the Houston rally was part of a broader international effort to amplify the voices of those silenced within Iran. “We are here to ensure that the world hears the voices of our compatriots who are being silenced,” stated Soli Azad.

The gathering coincided with ongoing demonstrations and increasing global attention towards the political unrest in Iran. Many attendees expressed their commitment to continue rallying weekly until they witness tangible change.

“There are mothers in Iran who don’t know the whereabouts of their children,” Mahdavi lamented. “That uncertainty fuels our determination to fight for a free Iran, week after week.”
