The Cicada will resonate with the vibrant sounds of Pablo & The Hemphill 7, Love Cuts, Ox Combine, and more during a voter-education festival taking place today, Sunday from 2 PM to 10 PM.

This event, dubbed Resistance Rock, will unfold at The Cicada, located at 1002 S Main St, Fort Worth, and there is no cover charge for attendees.

Ken Shimamoto, a prominent activist and member of STC, emphasized the importance of voter education, stating, “We are doing this now because it is clear that the task for those who want a sane and just government is voter education, all year round, whether or not there is an election.” He further elaborated that in order to instigate meaningful change, it is crucial to elect officials who prioritize the needs of the community over the interests of affluent donors. “To folks who say we’re not going to vote our way out of this ditch, I say if you can’t get folks up to Google where to vote, you’re not going to get them to bleed,” he asserted.

Shimamoto also pointed out the troubling normalization of voter apathy in the state, noting, “Some people seem to consider it a flex to be politically ignorant. I want to make political ignorance and disengagement the social equivalent of having a bad haircut.” He believes that art and music have the power to address people’s concerns and foster a sense of community, making a voter education initiative combined with a rock concert a fitting approach.
