A Texas woman has been charged with murder following a fatal stabbing incident in Southeast Houston. Ariyanna Cooper, 23, faces serious allegations in connection with the death of Travis Jerome Powell, who was killed on June 5 at an apartment complex.
According to court documents filed in Harris County’s 177th District Court, the incident occurred during an argument inside an apartment at the Wesley Square Apartments on Calhoun Road. Witnesses reported the altercation, which ended with Powell suffering a stab wound to his left side.
Upon arrival, Houston police found the victim being assisted by neighbors who had carried him outside in an effort to help. Despite their efforts and those of the Houston Fire Department paramedics who transported him to a hospital, Powell was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Initial police reports indicated that they were searching for a female suspect involved in the incident. A family member disclosed that the conflict arose because the woman was upset with Powell for being “outside.”
Cooper was apprehended on June 5 and formally charged the following day. The criminal complaint suggests that she either intentionally caused Powell’s death by stabbing him or engaged in conduct that resulted in serious bodily harm leading to his demise.
On June 6, Cooper appeared at a probable cause hearing, where a judge confirmed the existence of probable cause for the charges and issued necessary warnings. She is set to have a preliminary court appearance on June 8.
The investigation into the matter continues as authorities gather more information regarding the circumstances surrounding the stabbing.
