President Trump participated in a somber dignified transfer ceremony at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware on Wednesday, honoring two members of the Iowa National Guard who tragically lost their lives in Syria over the weekend.
The fallen guardsmen, Sgt. Edgar Brian Torres-Tovar, 25, from Des Moines, and Sgt. William Nathaniel Howard, 29, from Marshalltown, were serving with the 1st Squadron, 113th Cavalry Regiment. A U.S. civilian interpreter, Ayad Mansoor Sakat, was also killed during the incident, which the Pentagon described as an ambush by an ISIS gunman.
Before the dignified transfer, President Trump took time to meet with the families of the deceased soldiers. He was joined by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Army Chief of Staff General Randy George. Although First Lady Melania Trump was originally scheduled to attend, a White House official later announced she would be unable to do so.
Images released by the Iowa National Guard featured Sgts. Howard and Torres-Tovar, serving as a poignant reminder of their sacrifice. This marks the first dignified transfer that President Trump has attended since his inauguration in January, though he was involved in similar ceremonies during his previous term.
The dignified transfer at Dover Air Force Base serves to pay tribute to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. The remains of the fallen soldiers are carefully moved from the aircraft to a vehicle awaiting at the base, before being transported to the mortuary facility at Air Force Mortuary Affairs Operations located on the base.
According to Air Force Mortuary Affairs Operations, “The dignified transfer is not a ceremony; rather, it is a solemn movement of the transfer case by a carry team composed of military personnel from the fallen member’s respective service.” This process is conducted for every U.S. military member who dies in a theater of operations while serving their country.
