Austin's Oak Hill Parkway Project Completion Expected by Mid 2026, According to TxDOT

Austin’s Oak Hill Parkway project is on track for completion by mid-2026, according to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). This initiative aims to alleviate one of the city’s most heavily trafficked areas.

The Oak Hill Parkway Project, which commenced in the summer of 2021, is focused on enhancing the highway infrastructure. The upgrade includes the construction of two to three continuous main lanes on US 290 for traffic traveling in both directions, alongside two to three frontage road lanes in each direction.

A significant portion of the construction is centered on the “Y intersection,” where US 290 merges with SH 71. This intersection has been notorious for congestion, having faced increased traffic since 1995. Recently, crews have been applying the final touches, with new overhead signage visible near the west end of the project close to Scenic Brook Drive. The new SH 71 frontage roads are now operational, and flyover bridges are being erected to ensure uninterrupted access between the main lanes of US 290 and SH 71. Additionally, progress continues on the Convict Hill Road Bridge, the last cross-street bridge on US 290 that will facilitate eastbound and westbound traffic.

As the construction reaches its halfway mark, TxDOT celebrated the milestone with a Touch-a-Truck event. One of the remaining tasks is the completion of the US 290 main lanes, which TxDOT anticipates will significantly transform travel in and out of Austin.

Antonio Lujan from TxDOT stated, “In six months, people will start to notice a substantial difference, as they will be able to drive on US 290 without stopping at a signal to reach Downtown Austin.” The most notable change will be at the infamous “Y Intersection,” where a unique single point interchange, a first for Austin, is expected to ease congestion. The new traffic light system will manage the frontage roads beneath the flyovers.

This new setup will streamline traffic flow by reducing the signal phases from four to three, thereby expediting movement through this critical juncture.

As the projected completion date approaches, Lujan emphasizes the importance of patience during this construction period. “I understand that construction projects can be challenging, but ultimately, this effort is for enhancing safety and mobility along the corridor,” he remarked.

While some Central Texas drivers express optimism about the timeline, others remain skeptical. Driver Greg Bush commented, “No, I’d say 2027, hopefully,” while Amber Stefanick noted, “I’ll believe it when I see it, but I’m cautiously optimistic.”
