A tragic incident unfolded last Thursday in Brenham, where a 79-year-old woman witnessed a horrifying attack on a small dog she was walking. Lynn Anderson was looking after her neighbor’s 11-pound terrier mix, Opie, as part of her daily routine when a large pit bull charged at them.
The 80-pound pit bull had managed to break free from its tether, dragging a heavy chain as it lunged towards Opie. Anderson described the chaos, saying, “I looked up, and the dog was running full speed towards Opie and me.” Despite her desperate cries for help, the pit bull’s owner reportedly did not intervene and drove away as the attack unfolded.
The traumatic experience has left Anderson haunted. “I’m screaming get your dog off my dog, they just stood there,” she recalled, adding that the sight of Opie’s tragic fate has disrupted her sleep. “He didn’t have a chance,” she lamented.
Opie’s owner, Linda Owens, expressed her profound grief, comparing the loss to the death of a family member. “He was like my son. It’s like someone telling you your son was killed on the street,” she said, struggling to process the horror of the situation.
Anderson, who has owned pit bulls in the past, emphasized that her concern lies not with the breed itself but with irresponsible owners. “I don’t have anything against pit bulls, but I do have something against bad owners,” she stated.
In the aftermath of the attack, Brenham police have launched an investigation. The pit bull is currently in the custody of Brenham Animal Control, where it is expected to be classified as a dangerous dog and may face euthanasia.
