HUMBLE, Texas – The unsettling experience of a shooting at Deerbrook Mall on Saturday evening left many shaken, but one family’s story highlighted the kindness of a stranger. The incident, which occurred around 6:30 p.m., resulted in injuries to both a minor and an adult bystander, prompting a swift response from law enforcement already present at the mall.
Amidst the chaos, Alina, a 12-year-old girl, was forced to flee the mall in a panic while trying on shoes, leaving behind her Crocs and a newly purchased necklace. She escaped with just one shoe on her foot, wearing a sock on the other. Her mother, Angela, recounted the traumatic moment as they exited the mall.
After hearing of Alina’s distressing experience, a Good Samaritan named Andrew Zamarripas decided to intervene. He reached out to Angela and invited them back to the mall to complete their shopping trip. Zamarripas expressed his desire to help those in need, especially children, and wanted to bring a sense of normalcy back to Alina.
As they returned to the mall, Alina shared her mixed emotions, saying, “I feel kind of scared after what happened, but I’m also excited to get my shoes back.” The family found their belongings exactly where they had left them, signifying the abrupt end to their shopping adventure.
Zamarripas accompanied Alina and her family to the store, ensuring that she could purchase the complete pair of shoes she had initially chosen, along with anything else she desired. Angela reflected on their unexpected blessings, stating, “We ended up being blessed.” Zamarripas acknowledged the impact of Alina’s story, saying, “I love kids so much, and I’m really trying to be out here for the kids and the community as much as I can.”
