Elgin Introduces Pet Scanning Station to Help Locate Lost Animals

Elgin has introduced a new pet scanning station aimed at helping reunite lost animals with their owners more efficiently. Located at Veterans Memorial Park, just outside the Elgin Police Department, the station is designed to assist community members who find stray pets.

Users can utilize a QR code that provides detailed instructions on how to operate the scanner. The process is straightforward: after opening the box and retrieving the scanner, individuals can scan the animal. The device will display a microchip code, which can then be used to access the owner’s contact information through a dedicated website.

If the owner cannot be reached or if the animal lacks a microchip, individuals are advised not to abandon the pet. Instead, they can contact the Elgin non-emergency line at 512-303-7000. Additionally, a QR code is available that connects them to resources from the Texas Humane Network.

This initiative was proposed by a community member and has been operational for two weeks. Commander Aaron Crim from the Elgin Police Department noted that while he is unsure of its usage so far, the station empowers citizens to address lost pets independently, thereby allowing police officers to remain focused on their duties.

Crim highlighted the importance of this resource, especially during holidays like New Year’s when fireworks often lead to pet escapes. The goal is to minimize the number of animals entering shelters and ensure their safe return to owners.

Elgin, which is experiencing population growth, currently has only two animal control officers who do not work around the clock. The city ordinance mandates that pets should be microchipped, a measure that Crim believes significantly aids in the timely reunion of lost pets with their owners.

Looking ahead, the Elgin Police Department plans to expand the pet scanning program, with intentions to install additional stations in various locations throughout the city. Similar systems have already been implemented in nearby areas, including Leander and Austin.
