The city of Fort Worth has reached a settlement of $11.25 million with the family of Atatiana Jefferson, who was tragically shot and killed inside her home by a police officer in 2019. This agreement follows the recent conviction of former officer Aaron Dean for manslaughter in connection with Jefferson’s death.
A significant portion of the settlement will be allocated to trust funds established for Jefferson’s nephews and other family members. The Fort Worth City Council is scheduled to vote on the proposed settlement on August 25.
Details of the Settlement
The settlement amount includes a previously approved $3.5 million for Zion Carr, Jefferson’s nephew, who was present at the time of the shooting. The remaining funds are intended to support Carr and another nephew, along with other family members.
Reactions from Officials
Mayor Mattie Parker expressed her condolences, stating, “Atatiana Jefferson’s family and loved ones have suffered a profound and unimaginable loss. While no settlement can undo the devastating impact of this tragedy, we hope this agreement offers a meaningful measure of closure and allows everyone to move forward.”
Ashley Carr, Jefferson’s sister, commented on the settlement, highlighting its significance in achieving accountability. “This case represents a rare instance in which a family has received accountability both criminally and civilly following the killing of their loved one by a police officer,” she stated. “While we are grateful that Atatiana’s case resulted in both criminal and civil accountability, neither a conviction nor a financial settlement can restore what was taken from our family. Nothing can bring Atatiana home.”
The Incident
Atatiana Jefferson was fatally shot in 2019 while babysitting her 8-year-old nephew at her mother’s home. The incident was triggered by a neighbor’s non-emergency call to the police regarding an open door. Officer Aaron Dean responded to the call and, while checking the property, shot Jefferson through a window as she was in a bedroom holding a firearm after hearing a noise in the backyard. Dean is currently serving a nearly 12-year prison sentence for his conviction.
