Houston Dominates Idaho 78 45 to Advance to Second Round

The Houston Cougars advanced to the second round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament after a decisive victory over the Idaho Vandals, with a final score of 78-45.

Right from the start, Houston took charge of the game, establishing a significant lead and overwhelming Idaho in their first-round matchup.

During the game held in Oklahoma City, the Cougars quickly built a commanding 24-point lead by halftime, showcasing both offensive efficiency and a stifling defense. Houston shot an impressive 60% from the field in the first half, while limiting Idaho to a mere 27%, creating a clear advantage that set the tone for the match.

Houston’s strong defensive presence was evident as they dominated in various aspects, including a 39-25 edge in defensive rebounding. The Cougars capitalized on Idaho’s struggles, restricting second-chance opportunities and forcing the Vandals into tough shooting situations.

The offensive performance was highlighted by the standout play of guards Kingston Flemings and Emmanuel Sharpe, who combined for 34 points, with Flemings scoring 18 and Sharpe contributing 16. Their ability to control the pace of the game was key to Houston’s success.

Idaho, entering the tournament as a No. 7 seed after winning the Big Sky Conference, struggled against one of the nation’s top teams. K.J. Mitchell led the Vandals with 14 points but found it difficult to receive consistent support from his teammates.

The Vandals faced challenges from the outset, shooting only 19% from three-point range and 50% from the free-throw line in the first half. They never managed to find their rhythm against Houston’s relentless defensive pressure. Despite strong rebounding efforts from players like Kolton Mitchell and Jackson Rasmussen, Idaho could not match Houston’s size and efficiency.
