Authorities have detained a suspect following a tragic shooting spree that claimed the lives of six individuals in eastern Mississippi. The incident occurred in West Point, a town located near the Alabama border, where Clay County Sheriff Eddie Scott expressed deep sorrow over the “multiple innocent lives” lost due to this act of violence.
The suspect, identified as 24-year-old Daricka M. Moore, is currently in custody, with the sheriff assuring the community that there is no ongoing threat. During a press conference held on Saturday afternoon, Sheriff Scott revealed that the victims, who were related to the suspect, were shot at three different locations late Friday night. Among the deceased was a child, prompting the sheriff to question the motive behind such a heinous act, stating, “I don’t know what kind of motive you could have to kill a 7-year-old.”
Further details were not immediately available when the sheriff’s office was contacted on Saturday morning. Moore is facing a first-degree murder charge, which could potentially be escalated to capital murder, in addition to possible further charges related to the other victims.
The shootings unfolded in the rural area of Cedarbluff, situated just west of West Point, leaving the community in shock and mourning.
