A tragic incident occurred early Friday morning when a 73-year-old woman lost her life after being struck by a truck while walking along Westheimer Road. This roadway has recently been identified as one of the most perilous paths for pedestrians in the United States.
According to the Houston Police Department, the victim was hit by the driver of a white Dodge Ram truck traveling westbound near the 9500 block of Westheimer in the western section of the city. Witnesses at the scene recounted that a second vehicle also collided with the pedestrian.
Following the crash, the driver of the white Dodge Ram remained at the scene, while the other vehicle fled. Authorities noted that the driver of the Dodge Ram did not exhibit signs of intoxication.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the woman may not have yielded the right of way before entering the roadway. As of Friday afternoon, her identity had not been disclosed.
This fatal accident took place just two days after a report highlighted Westheimer Road as the most dangerous road for pedestrians in the country, based on data from the past several years.
The article indicated that from 2021 to 2023, Westheimer Road recorded the highest number of pedestrian fatalities, totaling 19 during that three-year span. Another roadway in Houston, FM 1960, was tied for fourth place nationally with 11 pedestrian deaths in the same period. Houston uniquely appeared multiple times on the list and was the only city in Texas to do so.

In a related incident last month, a Houston woman was convicted of manslaughter for a tragic crash involving her Porsche that resulted in the death of a man on a Westheimer Road sidewalk in 2023. The driver, Kristina Chambers, 34, received a sentence of 11 years and 14 days in prison on October 27.
