Texas Weather Alert: Comal River Access Temporarily Closed Following Heavy Rainfall

Access to the Comal River for recreational activities has been temporarily suspended due to significant rainfall and rising water levels in the region.

The city of New Braunfels has reported that the current conditions on the river are characterized by poor water clarity and swift currents, presenting dangerous situations for recreational users. City officials will continuously monitor the situation to determine when it can be deemed safe to reopen the river.

The Emergency Operations Center (EOC) in New Braunfels remains active as authorities keep a close watch on the changing weather conditions. The local fire department’s swift water rescue teams stand ready to respond as needed, and vehicles have been adapted for high-water situations to bolster emergency response efforts. Barricades have also been strategically placed in flood-prone areas to manage road closures if necessary.

Residents and visitors are urged to stay informed about weather updates and to avoid traveling unless absolutely essential during heavy rainfall events. Motorists are reminded of the critical safety message: “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” when faced with flooded roadways. It is also advised to refrain from driving around barricades or through submerged streets.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Warning for New Braunfels, valid until 3 p.m. on Wednesday, July 15. This warning comes after Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rainfall shortly before 10 a.m., with between one and three inches already recorded and an additional two to three inches anticipated.
