In a devastating incident on January 14, 2026, a construction crane collapsed onto a moving passenger train in northeastern Thailand, resulting in at least 22 fatalities. Authorities confirmed that 64 individuals sustained injuries as rescue operations continued amidst the wreckage, providing first aid to the affected.
The derailment took place on a section of a high-speed rail project aimed at linking China to various parts of Southeast Asia. The crane was involved in the construction of an elevated railway segment when it fell as the train was en route from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani province, approximately 143 miles northeast of the capital.
Images shared by Thai media depicted ominous clouds of smoke rising from the site, accompanied by construction machinery dangling precariously between two concrete support beams. Video footage from ThaiPBS showcased rescue workers navigating overturned train carriages, some bearing significant damage, while scattered crane debris littered the tracks.
Reports indicate that the train consisted of three carriages, with the last two suffering the most extensive damage. Transport Minister Piphat Ratchakitprakan revealed that there were 195 passengers aboard the train at the time of the accident and announced the initiation of a formal investigation into the incident.
A local resident, Mitr Intrpanya, recounted her experience, stating, “I heard a loud noise, like something sliding down from above, followed by two explosions. When I went to see what had happened, I found the crane sitting on a passenger train with three carriages. The metal from the crane appeared to strike the middle of the second carriage, slicing it in half.”
The collapsed section is part of a broader Thai-Chinese high-speed railway initiative designed to connect Bangkok with Nong Khai province, which borders Laos. This ambitious project, costing over 520 billion baht (approximately $16.8 billion), is integral to China’s Belt and Road Initiative, which seeks enhanced connectivity across Southeast Asia.
This tragic event follows a prior incident in August 2024, when a railway tunnel on the same route collapsed, resulting in the deaths of three workers, with heavy rainfall cited as a contributing factor.
