Dallas police continue their search for four masked gunmen responsible for a double murder that occurred two years ago. The case, which remains unresolved, was previously highlighted on Trackdown, prompting renewed calls for public assistance.
On December 27, 2023, at approximately 9:15 a.m., gunfire erupted in a shopping center parking lot at the intersection of Saint Augustine and Scyene Road. One victim, Jemarcus Irving, was believed to be the intended target, while Morland Smith, an innocent bystander, tragically lost his life in the incident.
Investigators have released detailed images of the suspects’ attire, as well as their vehicle, a red Nissan Sentra. Despite these efforts, the identities of the shooters remain unknown.
Details of the Incident
Detective Fernando Silva of the Dallas Police Department provided insights into the incident. “A red Nissan Sentra entered the parking lot from Saint Augustine traveling westbound,” he explained. “Four masked suspects exited the vehicle and began shooting.” According to surveillance footage and witness statements, it became evident that Morland Smith was not the target of the attack, with investigators concluding that Jemarcus Irving was likely aimed at.
After the shooting, the suspects fled the scene, returning to their vehicle and driving westbound on Scyene Road.
A Family’s Plea for Justice
Staphanie Smith, the sister of the deceased, remains hopeful for justice in her brother’s case. “Morland was laid back. He was quiet. He would joke a lot. He never really got into any trouble,” she reflected on his character.
Public Assistance Requested
Authorities are urging anyone with potential information about the case to come forward, especially those who may have seen clear images of the suspects as they exited the Nissan armed with firearms. Detective Silva emphasized the importance of these details, stating, “You can see clothing, the style of the shoes, the pants, and the hoodies that they’re wearing, which could help gauge their height and weight.” Tipsters are encouraged to reach out to Detective Silva at 214-608-2832 or via email at fernando.silva@dallaspolice.gov.
The detective believes that the clarity of the images could aid in identifying those responsible. Staphanie Smith added, “If you know something, please say something, because you could be in this position, and someone you know could be holding back information.”
