Arlington police officers have fatally shot a 56-year-old man who lunged at them with a knife while experiencing a mental health crisis. The incident unfolded late Thursday night as officers responded to a distress call at a residence in the 1700 block of West Lovers Lane, near Interstate 30.
Upon arrival, officers were informed by family members that the man was in a state of emotional turmoil and had made threats to take his own life. Hearing the man yelling inside the home, the officers acted quickly to evacuate a family member who was present. However, the situation escalated when the man, visibly agitated, produced a large knife.
According to a statement from the Arlington police, the officers issued multiple verbal commands for the man to drop the weapon, but he failed to comply and advanced towards them while still holding the knife. In response to the threat, one officer discharged their weapon multiple times, striking the man.
The individual was transported to a local hospital but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. Thankfully, no officers were harmed during the incident.
As of now, the identity of the deceased has not been disclosed, and the involved officers have been placed on administrative leave while the shooting is under review.
