Identities Revealed in Tragic Deep Ellum Shootings: Four Lives Lost and 15 Injured

Authorities have confirmed the identities of three of the four individuals who tragically lost their lives during a series of shootings in Deep Ellum, which also left 15 others injured. The incidents occurred in the vibrant entertainment district following Halloween celebrations early Sunday morning.

Identities of the Victims

The Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified two victims as Kaniesa Scott, 21, and Unique Elise Benjamin, 28. Scott succumbed to her injuries at Baylor University Medical Center, while Benjamin was found on the roadway in the 200 block of South Crowdus Street.

The family of a third victim, 25-year-old Anthony McCleary, has also come forward. His sister shared the devastating news, recounting how she learned of his death while he was celebrating Halloween with cousins in Deep Ellum. “I dropped down to my knees and was just in shock, asking where he was,” she expressed, emphasizing her desire for answers.

Details of the Shootings

The violence unfolded over approximately 75 minutes across three separate locations in the popular nightlife area. The first shooting was reported around 12:20 a.m. in the 2600 block of Elm Street, followed by another incident at 1:05 a.m. on Main Street, and the final shooting occurring around 1:35 a.m. on South Crowdus Street.

Dallas police Chief Daniel Comeaux noted that the number of injured individuals, around 15, remains subject to change, as some victims sought medical treatment independently. Officers had been strategically deployed to manage the anticipated crowds during Halloween festivities. In a remarkable response, nearby officers rushed to the sound of gunfire and were able to perform life-saving measures on at least one victim.

Community and Official Responses

Mayor Eric L. Johnson condemned the violence, labeling it “unacceptable” and reaffirming the city’s commitment to public safety. The Deep Ellum Foundation plans to conduct community listening sessions this week and will provide support for grieving families, including access to mental health resources.

While police have made some arrests and conducted interviews, they currently lack evidence linking the shootings or understanding the motives behind them. In response to the tragic events, U.S. Attorney Ryan Raybould announced “Operation Deep Cover,” an initiative aimed at enhancing law enforcement presence and resources in the Deep Ellum area.

Investigation Continues

Investigators are actively canvassing local businesses for surveillance footage and collecting evidence from the crime scenes. Dallas police are urging anyone with photos, videos, or social media content from the night of the shootings to reach out to Sgt. Boz Rojas.
