Texas Instruments Unveils State of the Art Semiconductor Factory in Sherman, Texas

Texas Instruments has inaugurated a new semiconductor manufacturing facility in Sherman, Texas, with a significant investment of $40 billion. The state’s Governor, Greg Abbott, was present for the ribbon-cutting ceremony, marking a pivotal moment for the region as the plant is expected to produce millions of semiconductor chips daily.

The new facility will create approximately 3,000 jobs, contributing to the local economy while addressing future supply chain disruptions for a variety of sectors, including electronics, automotive, and artificial intelligence data centers. This development positions Texas as a national frontrunner in semiconductor production.

The project has been several years in the making, taking 3.5 years to convert a vacant piece of land in Sherman, situated around 60 miles north of Dallas, into a state-of-the-art 300mm semiconductor wafer fabrication plant.

Texas Instruments has chosen Sherman as the site for multiple multi-billion-dollar semiconductor facilities, which are expected to produce millions of chips each day. These chips are essential for powering the technology that people rely on in their daily lives.

Additionally, the semiconductor chips will support the growing number of data centers in Texas that are being established to meet the rising demand for artificial intelligence technologies.

During the ceremony, Governor Abbott shared the stage with the company’s president and CEO, highlighting the significance of the investment. He remarked, “This facility will pave the way for safer and more connected vehicles, as well as enhance the electronics we depend on daily—from medical devices that monitor our health to the smartphones we carry.” He emphasized that Texas Instruments has made a substantial investment, bringing billions of dollars into the state and creating thousands of new jobs.

Abbott noted that Texas is now at the forefront of semiconductor manufacturing in the United States.

Dr. Joshua Rhodes, a research scientist at the University of Texas, commented on the transformative impact this semiconductor facility will have on the supply chain. He referenced the pandemic as a significant example, when a shortage of chips led to thousands of new vehicles being left idle at dealerships due to the lack of necessary technology components.

“During the pandemic, we experienced supply chain interruptions that prevented us from obtaining the components needed to manufacture the products we wanted to buy and use,” Dr. Rhodes stated.

He further expressed optimism about the facility’s potential to attract more high-tech businesses to Texas, stating, “The more high-tech industries we bring to the state, the more likely we are to attract additional high-tech opportunities.”
