Taylor City Ends Partnership with Flock Safety: What It Means for Local Crime Prevention

The City of Taylor has announced the termination of its contract with Flock Safety, leading to the removal of all Flock cameras from the area.

Since late 2023, Taylor maintained a contract with Flock Safety to operate eight license plate readers located along Highways 79 and 95. The intention behind acquiring these cameras was to assist local law enforcement in solving crimes.

However, the Taylor Police Department found that the effectiveness of the Flock cameras was significantly lower than expected, with their ability to aid in crime resolution not meeting initial hopes.

Concerns regarding data security and protection measures implemented by Flock Safety also contributed to the city’s decision. Police Chief Joseph Chacon expressed that the community’s confidence in the Flock Safety program had diminished, prompting the discontinuation of the service.

“Given the recent loss of trust in the Flock Safety program, its decreasing usage in other departments, and the lack of benefits for our community, we find it unjustifiable to continue our agreement with Flock,” Chacon stated. He noted that the city may reconsider the use of Automated License Plate Readers in the future if data security issues are satisfactorily addressed.

The eight Flock cameras will be disabled and removed in the days ahead as part of the contract termination process.
