Texas Game Wardens have released body camera footage capturing the dramatic rescue of a missing fisherman at Lake Tawakoni, highlighting the critical importance of safety equipment during boating activities. The incident occurred on a Saturday morning when the man, identified as Steven Otto, spent over three hours in the water after being ejected from his boat.
During a local fishing tournament, Otto’s vessel struck a submerged stump, leading to his fall into the lake. Thanks to the quick response of the Game Wardens, who received a call about Otto’s disappearance around 7:15 a.m., search efforts commenced promptly. After several hours of searching, the wardens spotted him in the distance using binoculars.
In the footage, the rescuers approach the exhausted fisherman, reassuring him with words of encouragement as they pull him from the water. Otto, who expressed his gratitude to the officers, was fortunate to have been wearing a life jacket, which played a crucial role in his survival.
Insights from the Rescue Team
Game Warden Josh Bonney shared his relief upon spotting Otto, noting that the water was relatively warm for this time of year, which helped mitigate the risk of hypothermia. He remarked, “When I first saw him, I could tell his head was up. He was alert and waving his arms.”
Fellow Game Warden Dewayne Noble recounted the intense moments leading up to the rescue, expressing their concern as the search extended into the day with rising temperatures. “It was excitement and relief all at the same time,” he said, reflecting on the successful outcome after their extensive search.

The Texas Game Wardens emphasized the importance of safety gear in preventing tragedies on the water. They credited Otto’s use of a life jacket and the emergency engine cutoff switch as vital to his survival. “Always wear a life jacket and use your engine cutoff switch. They only work if you use them,” the agency stated in a social media post following the incident.
Lake Tawakoni is located approximately an hour east of Dallas, and Otto hails from Royse City in Rockwall County. The successful rescue serves as a reminder of the potential dangers of boating and the essential practices that can save lives.
