Recently, a team of workers began transforming what is now known as Houston Stadium, previously referred to as NRG Stadium, by laying down the groundwork for the playing surface.

On a recent visit, we observed the meticulous efforts of crews as they installed a blend of Kentucky bluegrass and perennial rye grass. Over the next three and a half weeks, these experts will cultivate and establish a natural grass pitch that adheres to FIFA’s stringent requirements. While such a process typically spans 12 to 13 weeks, the team is working diligently to expedite their timeline.

Creating the Perfect Pitch

The journey to becoming a host city began nearly seven years ago, and the hard work is now coming to fruition. On May 1, the Houston host committee officially took charge of the field at NRG Stadium, marking a significant milestone in the preparation process.

To build the pitch, crews will follow a detailed five-step procedure. This process involves laying down a Perma void layer, followed by a geotextile layer, installing an irrigation system, adding sand, and finally placing the sod on plastic. Each step is critical to ensuring a robust and functional playing surface.

Notably, the sod that will be used has been growing in Denver, Colorado, for the past 18 months and is expected to arrive shortly. Additionally, specialized grow lights, which are essential for nurturing the grass both before and during the tournament, recently made their way to Houston after departing from the port of Rotterdam.

Once the pitch is fully prepared, FIFA will conduct a testing match in Houston during the second week of June to provide final approval of the playing surface, ensuring it is ready for the world’s most prestigious soccer event.
