Houston Police Seize Exotic Cars in Major Fraud Ring Investigation

Houston police have dismantled a significant auto fraud operation that involved the movement of stolen luxury vehicles from California to the city. Authorities report that this scheme relied on fraudulent mechanic’s liens in an attempt to profit from high-end cars.

The investigation led officers to a business located on Windswept Lane in west Houston, where they discovered a sophisticated fraud operation operating openly.

One individual has been taken into custody, and officials believe that this case represents only a small portion of a much larger issue.

The arrested man, identified as 35-year-old Talal Obeid, was apprehended after investigators revealed a substantial operation that included stolen vehicles and fraudulent mechanic’s liens.

These liens were allegedly used to falsely assert the necessity of costly repairs, sometimes exceeding $60,000, on luxury vehicles such as a 2024 Mercedes-Benz. However, upon inspection, officers found no significant damage or evidence of any repairs being carried out. Authorities suspect that the fraudulent paperwork was utilized to gain financial control over the vehicles.

During a search of the business on Windswept Lane, police seized nine exotic cars, along with cash and assets valued at over $900,000.

In legal documents, Obeid has filed a motion seeking the return of his property, claiming that some of the seized vehicles belong to customers who are currently having them repaired.

This operation is part of a larger initiative by the Houston Police Department to combat organized auto fraud related to stolen vehicles being transported across state lines.
