A man who was shot multiple times while walking his dog in Dallas has been joyfully reunited with his beloved pet after a harrowing experience. Joshua Painter was released from the hospital following an incident on Prairie Creek Road on August 31, where he was shot four times.
During the attack, Painter’s instinct was to protect his dog, Bella. “I dropped, and I rolled and tried to get her up to me,” he recalled. The shooting occurred around 11 p.m. when 18-year-old David Gabriel Ramirez allegedly opened fire at random. Painter described a chilling confrontation, recalling Ramirez asking him, “do you want to die today?” to which he responded, “dude, take me off your script” as he continued walking.
Authorities reported that Ramirez, who had been drinking and had left his nearby home, was hostile and armed when the shooting took place. Disturbing cell phone footage captured the scene, showing Painter bleeding on the side of the road, with Bella steadfastly by his side.
After the shooting, Painter and Bella were separated, but a compassionate stranger named Charlee Croker took it upon herself to help reunite them. Initially mistaking Painter for a homeless man with a pit bull, Croker began calling local hospitals in search of him. Upon discovering his identity, she felt compelled to assist. “He was like, can you help me get my dog back? I was hooked. I am a dog mom,” she said.
Croker picked Painter up from Parkland Hospital and brought him to the Dallas Animal Shelter, where he was joyfully reunited with Bella. Additionally, she provided him with lodging for the weekend. “I’m so thankful I got my dog back,” Painter expressed. “And a room to rest my neck for a bit and my foot.”
While the future remains uncertain for Painter and Bella, they are grateful to be together again. As for Ramirez, he was arrested on the night of the shooting but has since been released on bond.
