Two deputies from Bexar County were shot while responding to a domestic disturbance early Wednesday morning. Both officers are currently in stable condition, while the suspect, who opened fire from inside a home, was killed at the scene. Fortunately, the woman and her two children, who were present during the incident, were unharmed.
The incident unfolded between 8:30 and 8:45 a.m. when deputies were dispatched to a residence after a woman reported that a man had forcibly entered her home. The woman managed to escape and call for help before the deputies arrived. It has been confirmed that the man involved was estranged from her and did not live at the residence. The children, all under the age of 10, are regarded as witnesses, and the mother is being treated as a victim.
As deputies approached the suspect, he retreated into a makeshift bedroom and opened fire, shooting at close range. Investigators reported that fewer than ten rounds were fired during the brief exchange. One deputy sustained a gunshot wound to the hip, while the other was shot in the hand, both suffering through-and-through injuries. The suspect was struck twice in the upper body and was pronounced dead on the scene.
The injured deputies were taken to University Hospital, where they are listed in stable condition. One deputy has served more than ten years with the sheriff’s office, while the other has been with the department for approximately two years. Officials have identified the suspect as a 38-year-old Hispanic male, whose name has not yet been released. He is believed to have a criminal history and may have had outstanding warrants related to previous incidents at the same residence.
Authorities are currently reviewing body camera footage as part of their investigation. The scene will remain under examination for several hours as evidence is collected. Officials have reassured the community that there is no ongoing threat in the area.
