The City of San Marcos has reintroduced its dockless electric scooter program in collaboration with Texas State University, providing residents and visitors with a new fleet of Lime scooters this month.
On August 18, the San Marcos City Council unanimously approved a contract with Lime, replacing a previous service provider that had exited the local market. The renewed initiative officially commenced on September 1, operating under a profit-sharing arrangement between the city and Lime.
This program features an initial rollout of 150 electric scooters, which will be available around the clock, seven days a week. The scooters can be found throughout downtown San Marcos, the Texas State University campus, and neighborhoods east of Interstate 35, including areas such as Aquarena Springs and Blanco Gardens.
Transit Manager Amy Finn expressed enthusiasm about the program’s return, stating, “We’re excited to bring back the dockless scooter program. The scooters will offer a convenient transportation option while helping reduce traffic and improving air quality.”
To use the scooters, riders must be at least 18 years old, and multiple riders are not allowed on a single scooter. In an effort to ensure safety and protect local ecosystems, city officials have established strict no-ride zones, including Interstate 35, city greenbelts, and areas near the riverfront. Additionally, parking is prohibited in close proximity to the San Marcos River and within 10 feet of any ADA-accessible ramps.
Lime is also implementing a discounted fare program through Lime Access, aimed at providing affordable options for eligible individuals, such as those receiving SNAP, WIC, Medicaid, Pell Grants, or government housing assistance.
Community members are encouraged to report misplaced scooters or any operational issues via the city’s online portal at sanmarcostx.gov/smtxconnect.
