A suspect was fatally shot during an officer-involved incident in downtown Austin on Saturday morning, according to local authorities.
The Austin Police Department reported that the shooting occurred in the 1100 block of West Cesar Chavez Street, following a foot pursuit of the suspect. Fortunately, no officers or civilians sustained injuries during the confrontation.
Details surrounding the incident indicate that police received emergency calls shortly after 8 a.m. about a white male reportedly brandishing a handgun at bystanders near the intersection of Lamar Boulevard and West Cesar Chavez Street. Approximately three hours later, officers located the suspect near the TownLake YMCA.
Upon being spotted, the suspect fled on foot, prompting officers to engage in a chase.
Authorities state that officers attempted to instruct the suspect to drop his weapon multiple times, but he did not comply with their orders. An Austin Police Department spokesperson remarked, “The officers gave commands for the individual to drop the firearm. The subject refused to stop, refused to drop the firearm.” Eventually, when officers caught up with the suspect, they discharged their weapons, hitting him.
Following the shooting, officers provided immediate medical assistance; however, the suspect ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
As the investigation continues, authorities have not yet disclosed the identity of the deceased individual or provided information regarding the officers involved or the number of shots fired.
