Residents of Victory Park are experiencing significant disruptions to their daily lives due to heightened security measures associated with the Republican Midterm Convention taking place this week at the American Airlines Center. The increased security has resulted in road closures and the establishment of checkpoints that residents must navigate just to reach their homes.
As the convention approaches, local inhabitants are required to present identification, including proof of residency such as mail, to gain access to their apartments. Kyler Lopes, a Victory Park resident, expressed his frustration, stating, “It feels like this place is fortified. We’re like locked up.”
Street closures surrounding the American Airlines Center are set to continue until September 11, complicating the residents’ ability to carry out their daily activities. Collin Jones, another resident, noted the challenges, saying, “You can’t get around here. I was about to walk to 7-Eleven, but I had to park at Walgreens instead.”
In addition to identification checks, residents have received wristbands from their apartments to facilitate their movements. However, they are still advised to keep mail on hand as an additional means of proof of residence. “They said to prepare for up to an additional hour for your commute, which is insane,” Jones remarked, expressing hope that the situation wouldn’t escalate further.
Republican Midterm Convention Details
The Republican Midterm Convention is set for September 9-10 and will feature a lineup of 109 speakers, including keynotes from prominent figures such as President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance. The event is scheduled to unfold over two evenings, with the first night featuring Vance’s address and Trump closing both nights.
In addition to Trump and Vance, the convention will host speeches from Texas officials such as Ken Paxton, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, Senator Ted Cruz, Gov. Greg Abbott, and Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson. The event is expected to draw over 100 Republican House members and candidates, adding to the already significant attention surrounding the gathering.
For general admission attendees, transportation to the event will be provided via bus services from Grand Prairie to Dallas. Additional security measures include drone surveillance, coordinated by the Secret Service, to monitor the area around the venue and the surrounding downtown region.
On the eve of the convention, a range of merchandise was observed outside the American Airlines Center, including an eye-catching gold, bedazzled car emblazoned with Trump’s likeness.
