Austin Venues Unite to Support Aging Musicians in Inspiring HOMEcoming Fundraiser

Austin’s vibrant music scene is set to receive a boost as local venues participate in a unique fundraising initiative aimed at supporting aging musicians. The HOMEcoming campaign, organized by the nonprofit Housing Opportunities for Musicians and Entertainers (HOME), is now in its second year and encourages community engagement throughout the month of November.

Hanna Cofer, the executive director of HOME, emphasizes the deep-rooted connection between Austin’s identity and its musical heritage. For Cofer, homecoming traditions have always included festive elements such as elaborate decorative mums and spirited events. However, this year’s focus has shifted towards a collaborative effort to raise funds for musicians in need.

Rather than hosting a traditional gala, HOME is promoting a month-long campaign that highlights 20 participating venues across the city. Cofer explains, “People just need to visit these venues, enjoy the special cocktails, and catch a show. The more patrons these venues attract in November, the more support HOME will receive.”

The campaign’s inception can be traced back to Joe Ables, owner of Saxon Pub, who last year committed to donating $1 for every ticket sold during November, challenging other venues to do the same. To Cofer’s delight, the response from local clubs was overwhelmingly positive.

<p“The initial idea provided a framework, but each venue has its own unique approach,” Cofer noted. For instance, while venues like Donn's Depot are offering a signature cocktail throughout the month, larger venues like the Moody Center are taking a more conventional sponsorship route.

The roots of HOME extend back fourteen years when a group of musicians rallied to provide stable housing for Lavelle White, an 84-year-old blues artist. This initiative not only helped White secure her living situation but also highlighted the broader needs of aging musicians, leading to the establishment of HOME.

Since its founding, HOME has expanded its mission beyond housing, now encompassing advocacy and collaborations with healthcare organizations to ensure comprehensive support for its clients. “We’re implementing an inch-wide, mile-deep model,” Cofer stated, “to ensure our clients are holistically cared for during their time with us.”

Last year’s HOMEcoming campaign successfully raised approximately $75,000, a figure Cofer considers commendable for a first-time effort. More importantly, she notes, the exposure gained by both the nonprofit and the participating venues plays a crucial role in sustaining Austin’s musical culture.

<p“This initiative reflects our heritage and identity as Austinites,” Cofer remarked. “Even if residents may not attend live music events nightly, they should recognize the cultural significance of supporting the musicians who contribute to the city's vibrant atmosphere.”

Throughout November, HOMEcoming invites everyone to explore the lineup of events and curate their own musical experiences. Cofer has even arranged for each venue to receive a homecoming mum, adding a festive touch to the campaign.
