A section of the Ann and Roy Butler Hike and Bike Trail along the north shore of Lady Bird Lake will experience a detour starting Monday morning due to ongoing construction efforts.
Runners, cyclists, and pedestrians will need to navigate around the construction zone near the Austin Rowing Club boathouse at Trinity Street. This work is part of the Waller Beach Duct Bank Upgrade, a significant project aimed at enhancing the power supply to downtown Austin.
The detour will redirect trail users slightly toward Cesar Chavez Street. It’s also important to note that street parking on Brazos Street, south of Cesar Chavez, will not be available during this period. However, other parking facilities, including lots, garages, and loading ramps, will remain accessible.
This upgrade will introduce new electrical manholes and a protective system for cables, facilitating a direct power route from the Rainey Street substation to the downtown area.
The city has emphasized that this infrastructure investment is vital for bolstering long-term electrical reliability in downtown Austin and its neighboring regions, especially as demand continues to rise.
The detour is expected to remain in effect through the summer of 2027.
