Preservation of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo Memorial Items Before Canal Street Revamp

The memorial dedicated to Lorenzo Salgado Araujo on Canal Street is set to be preserved as METRO prepares to repave the road starting this Friday. This construction work necessitates the relocation of the memorial items.

In collaboration with the Houston Public Library, Araujo’s family has taken steps to ensure the preservation of these significant items. Ronaldo Salgado, along with a family representative and a member of LULAC, engaged with the Historical Research Center to discuss how best to safeguard the memorial pieces.

During this effort, Ronaldo and the library team successfully retrieved approximately 30 items from the memorial site. These items were subsequently transferred to the library following the completion of a signed donor agreement.

The mayor’s office has indicated that the collection is currently being stored at the Hispanic History Research Center, where it will be evaluated for potential inclusion in the Hispanic History Research Center and the Race and Social Justice Collection.
