Austin Rainey Street Shooting: Victim’s Brother Seeks Answers

AUSTIN, Texas – In the aftermath of a shooting that occurred on Rainey Street over the weekend, the brother of the victim is on a quest for answers regarding those responsible for the incident.

The shooting took place on July 24, around 1:24 a.m., when officers from the Austin Police Department responded to reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, they discovered a victim suffering from serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

<p"He's a great guy, always cheerful. He was out celebrating his birthday with close friends," the victim’s brother, who chose to remain anonymous during the ongoing investigation, shared. He recounted that his brother had just ordered a ride home when the events unfolded.

According to the victim’s brother, after leaving the bars, his brother waited on the sidewalk near Paseo. During this time, a stranger approached and began conversing with him. “They spoke for just a couple of minutes. Almost simultaneously, there was some whispering behind him,” the brother recalled.

It was at this moment that the stranger allegedly took his brother’s hat. Realizing the situation, the victim attempted to retrieve the hat peacefully. “He turned, not aggressively, just saying, ‘Okay, give me my hat back. Ha ha, nothing serious,’” his brother explained. Tragically, this simple act led to violence, as the assailant, part of a larger group, opened fire.

The victim was shot six times; one bullet struck his hand, while two others passed through his forearm. Another bullet shattered his humerus, and two more entered his back. He was subsequently taken to a hospital, where he has begun the arduous journey toward recovery.

As of now, the police have released surveillance videos featuring two teenage suspects linked to what has been classified as an aggravated robbery. The victim’s brother believes one of the individuals in the footage is the same person who spoke to his brother just before the shooting.

Holding those accountable for the attack has become a priority for the family. “This wasn’t just a robbery; to me, it was closer to attempted murder. There seems to be a complete disregard for human life,” he stated. “People should feel safe interacting with strangers downtown without the fear of being shot for no reason.”

The family is hopeful that the victim will be discharged from the hospital within a week, but acknowledges that the road to full recovery will be long and challenging. “His life has come to a standstill, and he faces months of rehabilitation,” his brother noted.

While the victim wishes to maintain his anonymity for now, his brother indicated that he may choose to come forward in the future.
