The Houston Police Department has made public body-worn camera footage from an August shootout involving a suspect now facing seven felony charges. Demetri O’Neal Thomas appeared in court last Friday for a bond hearing, where he was informed of the charges against him, which include four counts of aggravated assault against a public servant and three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
The situation escalated when Thomas allegedly fired at passing vehicles on North Wayside Drive, injuring three individuals. Upon the arrival of law enforcement, Thomas reportedly refused to lower his weapon and aimed it at the officers. In response, three Houston police officers and a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper discharged their firearms, hitting Thomas multiple times.
During the bond hearing, Officer Zavila, the first officer to engage in the incident, detailed his observations upon arriving at the scene. He described Thomas wearing see-through fishnet clothing and stated that while Thomas was vocal, his words were largely unintelligible. Zavila confirmed that three officers fired their weapons during the encounter, leading to Thomas sustaining several gunshot wounds.
The defense raised multiple objections during Zavila’s testimony, citing hearsay and speculation. The prosecution argued that Thomas poses a significant threat to the community, referencing his previous conviction for aggravated robbery and kidnapping, which resulted in a nine-year prison sentence. They requested that Thomas be held without bond.
In defense of his client, attorney Sylvia Escobedo contended that Thomas was not in a rational state of mind during the incident due to severe medical issues. She expressed concerns regarding the adequacy of medical care available at the Harris County Jail.
When questioned about his citizenship status, Thomas indicated he resides in the Houston area, though his legal status was not clarified. Ultimately, the judge sided with the prosecution and denied bail. Thomas is set to return to court for his arraignment on October 8.
