A security sergeant fatally shot a man armed with a knife inside the emergency room of Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center in west Houston on Saturday night. The incident unfolded after security personnel attempted to subdue the man using Tasers, which were unsuccessful.
The shooting occurred shortly before 9 p.m. at the hospital, located at 900 Gessner Road, as confirmed by Houston Police Department Lieutenant Ronald Wilkins. The suspect, a man in his early 30s, had voluntarily sought medical assistance earlier in the evening, expressing suicidal thoughts and intentions to harm himself. Wilkins noted that the individual was a regular visitor to the hospital for various medical issues and had been placed in a private room within the emergency department.
Just before 9 p.m., the man brandished a knife, prompting security officers to intervene and attempt to contain him. Despite discharging Tasers three times in an effort to disarm him, the situation escalated. After the third Taser discharge, the man fell to the ground, but as a security sergeant attempted to secure the weapon, the suspect regained control of the knife, leading the sergeant to discharge his firearm, striking the man three times in the torso.
Fortunately, no other security personnel discharged their weapons, and there were no reported injuries to other patients or hospital staff during the incident. Medical staff promptly provided care to the injured man, who was subsequently transported to another facility for specialized treatment. His current medical condition remains undisclosed.
In a statement released after the shooting, the Memorial Hermann health system underscored its commitment to security protocols while refraining from providing additional details. “The safety and privacy of our workforce, patients, and visitors are our top priority,” the statement remarked. “We are fully cooperating with law enforcement’s investigation and, due to patient privacy laws, cannot comment further at this time.”
The Houston Police Department is currently conducting an investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
