The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office has announced that charges have been filed in connection with a tragic crash that resulted in the death of a Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Trooper over the weekend.
Deputy Erika Serrato, aged 24, lost her life in the incident that occurred early Sunday morning. Authorities have charged 34-year-old Ashton Jammer with driving while intoxicated, while 20-year-old Ian Perez faces charges for passing certain vehicles and causing bodily injury.
Incident Overview
The events leading to the crash unfolded just before 2:45 a.m. when deputies responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a multi-vehicle accident. This initial crash acted as a “catalyst” for the subsequent incidents that followed.
According to the investigation conducted by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Jammer was identified as the driver responsible for the initial crash. He was arrested at the scene and taken to the Montgomery County Jail.
While deputies were managing the scene of the first collision, with marked patrol units on-site and emergency lights activated, a heavy-duty commercial vehicle towing a trailer struck Deputy Serrato as she was directing traffic outside her vehicle.
Authorities identified Perez as the driver of the commercial vehicle involved in the collision. After being treated at the hospital, he was arrested and charged for failing to slow down or move over while passing emergency vehicles, resulting in bodily injury.
The investigation into this fatal crash is ongoing, and further charges may be considered against Perez as more details emerge.
